September 2015

I hope you had a great Labor Day weekend and enjoyed some extra family time with the day off! This week our curriculum nights start.  Be sure to attend the night for each of your children's grade levels.  All grades are offering two sessions for your convenience.

Kinder, tomorrow, Thursday, 9/10 6:00 or 6:45 pm
1st grade, Monday, 9/14, 6:00 or 6:45 pm
2nd grade, Thursday, 9/17, 6:00 or 6:45 pm
3rd grade, Thursday, 9/17, 6:00 or 6:45 pm
4th grade, Tuesday, 9/22, 6:00 or 6:45 pm
5th grade, tomorrow, Thursday, 6:00 or 6:45 pm

From PTA:
Thanks to all of the moms who attended the Breakfast with Mom on Friday.  We had a great turn out and actually ran out of food at the end.  We will plan for more next time! Dads, it will be your turn on Friday, October 2nd, at 7:00 am, when we host Breakfast with Dad.

Fall Carnival planning is in full swing. The carnival will be held on Saturday, October 10, 4:30-7:30 pm.   We hope you will make plans to attend.  If you would be interested in helping with the planning, please attend a meeting on Monday, 9/14 at 6:45 pm, at Parkview.
We are in need of Vendors for our Fall Carnival. We already have Scentsy, Pampered Chef and Keep Collective vendors registered.. We will not duplicate vendors.
If you are interested in being a vendor, please contact Mary Eisen at meisen@Pdxinc.com or  Daniel Rhoades at dmwmrhoades1@gmail.com.  They will send you the registration form.

Lego Club!
Last year we started a Lego Club and we are excited to continue that this year! Once a month on a Monday night, 6:00-7:00 pm, parents and Parkview students are invited to attend Lego Club in the Parkview Cafeteria.  The parent and child will work together to build something that matches the announced theme for the night.  (Parent attendance is required as this is a interactive event between the two of you!)
The dates for this year's Lego Club have already been set:
Sept 21
Oct 19
Nov 16
Jan 25
Feb 15
March 21
April 18
May 16
So the first club will be soon (Sept. 21st) and we hope you will join us!

Lost and Found
Please remember to write your child's name on anything you send to school that they could possibly take off (jacket, sweater, sweatshirts) or set down (backpack, lunch box, etc.) The lost and found items are left on the stairs of the stage in the cafeteria each day.  After a few weeks, the items with no name are taken away.  Please help us reunite your child with his or her items by writing a name on everything!

Fund Raiser
I am really excited about our fund raiser this Fall.  We will be doing a Read-A-Thon! More information will be coming home next week in the Thursday Folder! Nothing to sell! Just find sponsors and get your kids to read (or read to them if they are readers yet!).  So simple and so exciting to promote something we want them to be doing anyway! If we make enough to cover our expenses for this school year from this fund raiser, we will not have to sell items in the Spring! Our goal is to make $10,000.
If you have a business who would like to be a sponsor on our Read-a-thon page, please email me (eepps@ems-isd.net) with the contact info and I will send them the information.  Businesses can support us for as little as $25.

Parkview Shirts
Tomorrow in the Thursday folder, you will receive an order form for a variety of Parkview shirts.  This is your opportunity to order short and long sleeve t-shirts, sweatshirts, and polos in some different styles than we have available at school.  Money and orders are due by 9/25/15.  You can also go online to order at www.spiritandpride.com and use the school code 361540 to order with a credit card.

Counselors Corner:
Hi! My name is Ms. Rogers and I am the guidance counselor here at Parkview! Students can come see me when a parent/guardian, a teacher, or a student requests it.  My job is to help students be successful in school.  Students are never in trouble when they come to see me.  I can help a student understand feelings, calm down when upset or worried, discuss difficult situations, help with peer conflict, or problem solving.  I conduct guidance lessons in the classrooms with all students, in small groups throughout the year, and can see kids individually.  If you have a concern, you can always contact me here at school! lrogers@ems-isd.net

Curriculum Nights are Coming Soon!

Parents,
The start of school has been really great and the kids are already getting into a routine with their schedule.  This is great news for everyone.  Hopefully you are finding a routine at home as well!

We are now counting tardies at 7:40 am, each morning so please do your best to have your child here before that time.  All kids move to their classrooms between 7:30 and 7:35 am.  If your child arrives after 7:40 am, he or she will already have missed the beginning instructions and first activity.

Crosswalk Reminder:
If you park your car to walk your child into the building in the morning, you must use the crosswalk where Mr. Nuss is standing in order to cross the driveway.  This is for your safety and the safety of the drivers who must stop for you unexpectedly when you cross in the wrong place.

District Wide College Shirt Day:
This Friday, September 4th, the entire EMS ISD will be celebrating a college day together, so wear your favorite college shirt or colors and join us as we celebrate!

Parkview Shirts on Fridays!
Each Friday, we all wear our Parkview shirts to school.  Don't have one yet? We have this year's shirt available for sale in the office for $15.  We even have some of last year's shirt still available if you like variety!  There will be an opportunity to buy a few more styles later this fall.

Mom Breakfast this Friday, 9/4!
Each month our PTA sponsors a parent breakfast at 7:00 am, in our library.  It rotates between moms and dads.  The menu is cinnamon rolls, juice, and milk.  This month we are hosting moms and their kids.  The breakfast will end by 7:30 am, so be here by 7:00 to enjoy breakfast and a short program on parenting.

No School This Monday!
Just a reminder that Monday, Sept 7th, is a holiday and there will be no school!

Curriculum Nights
Curriculum Nights start next week.  Please make plans to attend a session for each of your children.  We are offering each grade level twice to allow you flexibility.
Kindergarten and 5th grade, 9/10 at 6:00 and 6:45 pm
1st grade, 9/14 at 6:00 and 6:45 pm
2nd and 3rd grade, 9/17 at 6:00 and 6:45 pm

Dress Code:
The district dress code is available at http://www.emsisd.com/Domain/94  in the student handbook on page 49 and 50.  The basics of the dress code are:

-leggings are not pants and must have something over them that is fingertip length
-underwear cannot be visible (sagging pants, holes in inappropriate places, tank tops or other tops with bra straps visible are not allowed)

Parent drop off and pick up:
The first days are always the worst and hardest days for pick up and drop off.  It will get better as we learn the names and cars.  Ultimately, it is all about student safety! Please drive as if the child crossing the street or getting in/out of the car is your own!
  • AM drop off begins at 7:10 am. Students may not be left unattended at school before this time.  If you wait to arrive after about 7:25 am, you should expect to have to wait in line to drop off.
  • Please drop off once anywhere along the curb, not just in front of the doors so more cars can unload at one time.
  • PM pick up begins at 2:40 pm.  If you have multiple students to pick up, they should all gather with the youngest child at his/her pick up spot.
  • Kinder and 1st grade students are picked up in the front drive way facing the library and Crystal Lake Dr. using a single file line.
  • 2nd-5th grade students are picked up in the side driveway off of Cromwell Marine Creek Rd. using a double line (watch the teacher at the curve for your line direction).
  • Parents must stay in their car in line in order to do parent pick up.  If you park and get out, you will will be sent to get back in the car line.
  • Please place your paper with your child's name (received at Meet the Teacher) in the passenger or front window so we can identify you quickly.
  • Please move the booster seat for the child being picked up to back seat, right side so we can load kids from the curb if at all possible.  (State law requires boosters for kids under age 8 and recommends any child under 4 ' 9" be in a booster seat, regardless of age) https://www.dps.texas.gov/director_staff/public_information/occSafetyPrgmFAQs.htm
  • Cell phones may not be used while driving on school property.  This is a state law.
If you must occasionally change your pick up plans, please call the office before 2:15 pm, so we can get word to your child and his/her teacher.  You must be registered for the bus in order to ride.  Bus registration can be completed by going here http://www.emsisd.com/Domain/87 and then print and bring to school.  Processing bus registration takes 24-48 hours.

From the Nurse:
We have several students with peanut allergies this year.  Because of this, we have gone peanut-free in the classrooms for snacks.  Please be sure anything you send for snack is peanut free. (Made in a peanut facility is ok, but it cannot contain peanuts or peanut butter.) At lunch, we offer an allergy table to protect anyone with severe food allergies.  If your child has allergies (or any other health concerns) please be sure you have communicated these with our nurse, Mrs. Brandye Adams.

Upcoming Events
Curriculum Nights are offered in each grade level and are an important event to attend each year.  Your child's teacher will share specific content that will be covered in each content area, strategies you can use at home to support classroom instruction, homework expectations and how much help parents can provide, and more! Each one will be offered twice for your convenience (6:00 and 6:45 will be the same information!)

Curriculum Nights
Kindergarten and 5th grade, 9/10 at 6:00 and 6:45 pm
1st grade, 9/14 at 6:00 and 6:45 pm
2nd and 3rd grade, 9/17 at 6:00 and 6:45 pm
4th grade, 9/22 at 6:00 and 6:45 pm

Back to School Family Picnic and PTA meeting
Please make plans to join us on Tuesday, Sept 15th at 6:00 pm, for our annual Back to School Family Picnic. Bring your own picnic dinner (homemade or fast food drive-thru), blankets, chairs, etc, and eat dinner while you meet your kids' friends and family members.  A PTA meeting will be held at 6:30 pm, to inform you of upcoming plans, volunteer opportunities, and service projects.

Meet the Teachers!

We are excited to see all of our new and returning Parkview students! You will have your first opportunity to come see us this week when we hand out teacher assignments.  (You must have completed online registration in order to receive a teacher assignment!)

  • Thursday, August 13th, noon to 8 pm
  • Friday, August 14th, 8 am to 4 pm
  • Tuesday, August 18th, 6 pm to 8 pm
Additionally, we are offering an orientation meeting to our new students and parents.  This is not required, but may be helpful to those of you new to our school.  (Both sessions will be the same and will include information about the school day and a tour of our building.)
  • Friday, August 14th, 11 am
  • Tuesday, August 18th, 7 pm
Meet the Teacher will be held on Thursday, August 20th! Come meet your teacher and drop off your school supplies! (We encourage you to bring all supplies this night so you can help carry them to the room.)
  • 1st - 5th grade, 6:00-7:30 pm, come and go
  • Kindergarten, 7:00-7:45 pm, parent meeting
Speaking of school supplies, we do have some pre-packaged supplies still available for sale in our office.  Come by before we run out!  Pre-packaged supplies will be delivered to your child's room before Meet the Teacher.  Supply lists are available online at www.emsisd.com/site/Default.aspx?PageID=621

School will start on Monday, August 24th.  Doors open at 7:10 am.  Breakfast is served 7:10-7:30 am, daily.  Students will move to their classrooms at 7:30 am, and will be tardy if not in class by 7:40 am.  The lunch schedule will be as follows:
  • Kinder 10:45-11:15
  • 1st grade 11:10-11:40
  • 2nd grade 12:50-1:20
  • Novoa and Carreno 12:15-12:45
  • 3rd grade 12:00-12:30
  • 4th grade 12:25-12:55
  • 5th grade 11:35-12:05
School will dismiss at 2:40 pm, daily.  We ask that you allow your child to ride the bus on the first day of school if that will be his/her normal form of transportation.  If you will be doing parent pick up, review the map you receive at Meet the Teacher to be sure you are in the correct line.  Siblings will be at the pick up of the youngest child.  Please inform your older kids' teachers if this is the case for your family. (Ex: if you have a kindergartner and a 3rd grader, both children will be picked up in the kindergarten line and you need to tell the 3rd grade teacher about the Kinder sibling.)

This will be our new format for parent newsletters from the office.  You can subscribe by completing the "follow by email" on the top right of this page and you will receive updates automatically! We will continue to send phone messages and use the Remind text messaging system.  Please be sure you have signed up for Remind by sending a text message to 81010 that says @parkviewp (this is short for parkview parents so the "p" is supposed to be on the end).  (All teachers will be using Remind in their classrooms to send messages to parents this year as well.)

If you have questions or need help in any way before we see you, feel free to call or email!
Can't wait to see you again!

Mrs. Epps, Principal
