September 2015

I hope you had a great Labor Day weekend and enjoyed some extra family time with the day off! This week our curriculum nights start.  Be sure to attend the night for each of your children's grade levels.  All grades are offering two sessions for your convenience.

Kinder, tomorrow, Thursday, 9/10 6:00 or 6:45 pm
1st grade, Monday, 9/14, 6:00 or 6:45 pm
2nd grade, Thursday, 9/17, 6:00 or 6:45 pm
3rd grade, Thursday, 9/17, 6:00 or 6:45 pm
4th grade, Tuesday, 9/22, 6:00 or 6:45 pm
5th grade, tomorrow, Thursday, 6:00 or 6:45 pm

From PTA:
Thanks to all of the moms who attended the Breakfast with Mom on Friday.  We had a great turn out and actually ran out of food at the end.  We will plan for more next time! Dads, it will be your turn on Friday, October 2nd, at 7:00 am, when we host Breakfast with Dad.

Fall Carnival planning is in full swing. The carnival will be held on Saturday, October 10, 4:30-7:30 pm.   We hope you will make plans to attend.  If you would be interested in helping with the planning, please attend a meeting on Monday, 9/14 at 6:45 pm, at Parkview.
We are in need of Vendors for our Fall Carnival. We already have Scentsy, Pampered Chef and Keep Collective vendors registered.. We will not duplicate vendors.
If you are interested in being a vendor, please contact Mary Eisen at meisen@Pdxinc.com or  Daniel Rhoades at dmwmrhoades1@gmail.com.  They will send you the registration form.

Lego Club!
Last year we started a Lego Club and we are excited to continue that this year! Once a month on a Monday night, 6:00-7:00 pm, parents and Parkview students are invited to attend Lego Club in the Parkview Cafeteria.  The parent and child will work together to build something that matches the announced theme for the night.  (Parent attendance is required as this is a interactive event between the two of you!)
The dates for this year's Lego Club have already been set:
Sept 21
Oct 19
Nov 16
Jan 25
Feb 15
March 21
April 18
May 16
So the first club will be soon (Sept. 21st) and we hope you will join us!

Lost and Found
Please remember to write your child's name on anything you send to school that they could possibly take off (jacket, sweater, sweatshirts) or set down (backpack, lunch box, etc.) The lost and found items are left on the stairs of the stage in the cafeteria each day.  After a few weeks, the items with no name are taken away.  Please help us reunite your child with his or her items by writing a name on everything!

Fund Raiser
I am really excited about our fund raiser this Fall.  We will be doing a Read-A-Thon! More information will be coming home next week in the Thursday Folder! Nothing to sell! Just find sponsors and get your kids to read (or read to them if they are readers yet!).  So simple and so exciting to promote something we want them to be doing anyway! If we make enough to cover our expenses for this school year from this fund raiser, we will not have to sell items in the Spring! Our goal is to make $10,000.
If you have a business who would like to be a sponsor on our Read-a-thon page, please email me (eepps@ems-isd.net) with the contact info and I will send them the information.  Businesses can support us for as little as $25.

Parkview Shirts
Tomorrow in the Thursday folder, you will receive an order form for a variety of Parkview shirts.  This is your opportunity to order short and long sleeve t-shirts, sweatshirts, and polos in some different styles than we have available at school.  Money and orders are due by 9/25/15.  You can also go online to order at www.spiritandpride.com and use the school code 361540 to order with a credit card.

Counselors Corner:
Hi! My name is Ms. Rogers and I am the guidance counselor here at Parkview! Students can come see me when a parent/guardian, a teacher, or a student requests it.  My job is to help students be successful in school.  Students are never in trouble when they come to see me.  I can help a student understand feelings, calm down when upset or worried, discuss difficult situations, help with peer conflict, or problem solving.  I conduct guidance lessons in the classrooms with all students, in small groups throughout the year, and can see kids individually.  If you have a concern, you can always contact me here at school! lrogers@ems-isd.net

Curriculum Nights are Coming Soon!

Parents,
The start of school has been really great and the kids are already getting into a routine with their schedule.  This is great news for everyone.  Hopefully you are finding a routine at home as well!

We are now counting tardies at 7:40 am, each morning so please do your best to have your child here before that time.  All kids move to their classrooms between 7:30 and 7:35 am.  If your child arrives after 7:40 am, he or she will already have missed the beginning instructions and first activity.

Crosswalk Reminder:
If you park your car to walk your child into the building in the morning, you must use the crosswalk where Mr. Nuss is standing in order to cross the driveway.  This is for your safety and the safety of the drivers who must stop for you unexpectedly when you cross in the wrong place.

District Wide College Shirt Day:
This Friday, September 4th, the entire EMS ISD will be celebrating a college day together, so wear your favorite college shirt or colors and join us as we celebrate!

Parkview Shirts on Fridays!
Each Friday, we all wear our Parkview shirts to school.  Don't have one yet? We have this year's shirt available for sale in the office for $15.  We even have some of last year's shirt still available if you like variety!  There will be an opportunity to buy a few more styles later this fall.

Mom Breakfast this Friday, 9/4!
Each month our PTA sponsors a parent breakfast at 7:00 am, in our library.  It rotates between moms and dads.  The menu is cinnamon rolls, juice, and milk.  This month we are hosting moms and their kids.  The breakfast will end by 7:30 am, so be here by 7:00 to enjoy breakfast and a short program on parenting.

No School This Monday!
Just a reminder that Monday, Sept 7th, is a holiday and there will be no school!

Curriculum Nights
Curriculum Nights start next week.  Please make plans to attend a session for each of your children.  We are offering each grade level twice to allow you flexibility.
Kindergarten and 5th grade, 9/10 at 6:00 and 6:45 pm
1st grade, 9/14 at 6:00 and 6:45 pm
2nd and 3rd grade, 9/17 at 6:00 and 6:45 pm

Back to School Family Picnic and PTA meeting
Please make plans to join us on Tuesday, Sept 15th at 6:00 pm, for our annual Back to School Family Picnic. Bring your own picnic dinner (homemade or fast food drive-thru), blankets, chairs, etc, and eat dinner while you meet your kids' friends and family members.  Kona Ice will be here to sell snow cones!
A PTA meeting will be held around 6:30 pm, to inform you of upcoming plans, volunteer opportunities, and service projects.

Dress Code:
The district dress code is available at http://www.emsisd.com/Domain/94  in the student handbook on page 49 and 50.  The basics of the dress code are:
-shorts, dresses, and skirts must be fingertip length or longer
-clothing cannot depict anything we do not allow at school (drugs, alcohol, etc)
-leggings are not pants and must have something over them that is fingertip length
-underwear cannot be visible (sagging pants, holes in inappropriate places, tank tops or other tops with bra straps visible are not allowed)
-hair cannot cause a distraction, so no extreme Mohawks or unnatural color on all hair

This year, we will allow:
- tank tops as long as underwear (bra straps) not visible
- a small section of not more than 2" of an unnatural color in the hair

Our students go to the playground every day and it is covered in wood chips.  Tennis shoes are always the recommendation for footwear every day.
